What is BC Cares?

BC Cares is a program that was designed by the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) in 2007 to recruit care aides into the growing seniors care sector. Initially developed as a pilot with the Fraser Health Authority, BC Cares became a province-wide initiative in 2009-2009.

Results: First Comprehensive Labour Market Survey of "Non-Health Authority" Seniors Care Providers in BC

Earlier this year, residential care, assisted living and home care providers were invited to participate in a survey of non-health authority operated facilities in the seniors care sector. The survey was conducted by the Health Employers Association of British Columbia (HEABC) and developed in co-operation with BC Care Providers Association. The results of the survey have been tabulated and the reports are now available.

The goal of the survey was to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Care Aide (RCA) and Home Care Aide/Community Health Worker (HCA) recruitment, retention and vacancy situations in the BC "non-health authority" seniors care sector.

The report includes demographics, workforce profile and human resources forecast of the three occupations through to 2019. It complements the 10 year BC forecast for health authority seniors' care facilities released earlier this year.

This report will form the basis of a strategic plan to address labour shortages in the seniors' care sector being developed by the BCCPA's Seniors Care Human Resources Committee. The Committee's work is being supported by a grant from Canada-BC Labour Market Agreement through the BC Ministry of Advanced Education.

Strategies that respond to the issues identified in the labour market forecasts will be developed over the summer in consultation with key stakeholder groups to help ensure BC's health care system has access to a sustainable supply of seniors care aides and LPNs in the future.
