What is BC Cares?
BC Cares is a program that was designed by the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) in 2007 to recruit care aides into the growing seniors care sector. Initially developed as a pilot with the Fraser Health Authority, BC Cares became a province-wide initiative in 2009-2009.

$1.7 Million in New Funding to Train LPNs and Health Care Assistants in BC
To help address employment demands in the health sector, the BC government has confirmed they will invest over $1.7 million to create over 200 new student spaces to train practical nurses, health care assistants and medical office assistants.
These new graduates will provide health care in a variety of institutional and community settings, including both home support agencies and residential care facilities. The funding will be allocated to six public-post secondary institutions across the province as follows:
- $726,650 to expand delivery of three health care programs at Camosun College for practical nurses and health care assistants
- $477,800 double the student spaces for health care assistants at North Island College, fund an evening practical nursing program at their Comox Valley campus and create a new access program in Port Hardy
- $322,400 to train 38 Aboriginal health care and medical office assistants at Vancouver Community College and the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology
- $85,000 for 10 additional spaces at the College of New Caledonia
- $48,000 for six additional spaces at Northern Lights College
Funding will be provided for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.
These initiates support the goals and objectives of the BC Care Providers Association's "BC Cares" program which is focused on ensuring the seniors' care sector has access to a sustainable supply of labour to meet the demands of our aging society.
