What is BC Cares?

BC Cares is a program that was designed by the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) in 2007 to recruit care aides into the growing seniors care sector. Initially developed as a pilot with the Fraser Health Authority, BC Cares became a province-wide initiative in 2009-2009.

Being a better nurse

Rick Luscombe's 25 years as a registered nurse have been a steady climb up the professional ladder. Each step opened up new opportunities, not just to promotions, but to jobs providing personal and professional satisfaction.

"In many ways, it has all been about expanding my scope of knowledge," says Luscombe, vascular access clinical nurse leader at St. Paul's Hospital.

"There would be jobs I wanted to do, so I did the things I needed to do to become more qualified and better able to deliver care."

A graduate of the three-year diploma course in nursing from Toronto's George Brown College in 1985, he became one of the first nurses in Vancouver to gain certification in nephrology (the science concerned with the kidneys) as a specialty in 1997. The job he wanted was the one he has now.
